In 1986, company partner Chris Stork started an apprenticeship as an electronics and communications technician. Chris was based in Ballarat Victoria, for one year, and in 1987 transferred to the western suburbs of Melbourne, where he spent the next few years completing his apprenticeship, and gaining field experience with installation and fault-finding on all types of electronics and communications equipment. Many trips to country areas were made, where he gained further experience in remote area situations, and was surprised at the extensive use of solar power in these often-harsh climates.

Over many years of "tinkering" and experimenting with solar energy as a hobby, Chris decided to take this interest further, and in 1995 completed the renewable energy course and passed all exams with a pass rate of 99% for design and installation of remote area power systems with The Sustainable Energy Industries Association of Australia (now called the Busniess Council for Sustainable Energy). This gave him provisional accreditation, to design and install solar and renewable energy systems in all types of situations, including but not limited to domestic and  commercial systems.

In 1998, a surplus of staff saw redundant positions becoming available, so it was decided that Chris would be working full time with renewable energy. As a result, K & C Stork Solar Power Consultants became established as a partnership, rather than a part time consultancy, to cater for the rise in the number of solar energy consultations and installations that were also being experienced.
